I'm not sure if everyone's heard the word nutraceuticals before, but I'm sure you've seen what I'm talking about. VitaminWater is a great example of a nutraceutical i.e. food or drink that help your health. What??? (Reality show record scratch). Yes, I know that good food, like fresh fruit and whole grains, helps your health the most. So nutraceuticals is mostly a marketing thing. Which is fine as long as people know that.

Good skin does not come from slickly marketed beauty drinks and foods, critics say, but from vegetables, whole foods and plain water."

Look, it's not horrible to drink or eat some of this stuff. If it tastes yummy then go for it. Everything in moderation (as Socrates and my dad always said/says). But plain ole water really is the best thing for your skin. Plus some supplementation, as directed by a dermatologist and/or esthetician, can be beneficial.

Beauty Kits: Fact or Faked?

Even though I've worked in marketing for years, I'm still a sucker for a good sales pitch. Beauty kits can go either way with me. Either I'm thankful that the manufacturer had enough good sense to put those killer products together in an awesome gift bag ... or... I look at the product assortment and packaging in disbelief.

Sephora sent me an email a while back with links to three different kits. The bride kit is great. If you are low key and want to do your own make-up for your wedding, this is the kit for you. It's got a perfect assortment of bestsellers in the Make-up Industry (Benefit primer, Tarte Mascara) in beautiful neutral shades that work well for wedding photography. Plus the packaging is super cute.

The third kit, which features Sephora bestsellers, is a great value. That's the other thing about kits. A lot of times if you are thinking about buying two products that are in a kit, it's sometimes a better value to just buy the kit. I learned that little lesson my make-up guru Bianca!

Since Mars is staying a verylong time in Virgo (until July 2012), I want to take a moment to talk aboutthis transition one more time. I know a lot of people paralyzed by what they should do as a skin care routine. Clinique did a great job with the Cleanse, Tone, Moisturize campaign. So good that you would be amazed at the amazement that a lot of my clients have when I say you don't necessarily need to tone. The paralysis comes from too many products out there and too many opinions. You have to do this! Your skin is lost without this!

Well here's one more opinion to add to the mix: It's all about finding the right products that fit your skin type and lifestyle. After years of buying tons of products that I didn't love, I found MakeupAlley.com for product reviews. But nothing replaces going to a facialist that you trust and getting product recommendations. There are other fabulous reasons to go to a facialist (relaxation, therapy, extractions, professional only treatments) but the number one reason to go is so you can get put on a skin care routine.

The one thing I like about this article is the emphasis on more skin care products and less foundation. Foundation/Concealer really only needs to be used on parts of your face that skin care products can't really correct or haven't corrected yet. The worst is if you have problem skin and you cover up the problems by shellacing on more foundation. Then your skin care problems will never be solved because you aren't allowing your skin to breathe!

A deeply cynical person (like myself) would scoff at new steps being added by a manufacturer since they want to sell more products. But what isn't cynical about changing up your routine is figuring out what you really need to do and why. Learn about the ingredients that work on your skin and buy only those products, no more.

For example, here's my skin care routine right now (it's a bit colder so I've changed it up from summer when my skin is oiler). The most important thing is the ingredients. You don't have to buy these particular brands, athough I've tried several Glycolic toners, cleanser and moisturizers and these are the ones that are the best.

Great post about all the new products that keep coming out trying to capture our attention if only for a moment. I think this is applicable to all the consumer packaged goods/services/things that people are trying to sell us. There's just a general sense out there that everyone is tired. Too much stuff is trying to be sold to too many people that have too little money.

How do we come back from the brink? Filtering. I posted a quote on my Facebook page about information overload. The crux of the problem is filter failure. Too much information is getting through that would have been filtered in years past (stopped by either economics or lack of access)

I'd say one of the biggest problems I've encountered since working as an esthetician is that everyone has a favorite brand. I'm no different. I've found brands that I love since working at a med spa. And I'm sure I'll find more brands that I love. The problem comes when everyone assumes that I know everything about every brand. No, I'm sorry, I haven't heard of your skin care brand that you love. I'm sure it's awesome. But I don't have time in my life (or with my skin) to try every single product that is out there.

What's your beauty filter? Mine happens to be brands sold in professional only channels. I'm mostly familiar with and tend to trust more brands that are sold to beauty professionals. Why? Because they have to make the product good enough for a professional to like it. Professionals are picky and hard to please because they need stuff that's going to work on their clients, or they won't get any repeat business. Also companies typically consult with professionals while creating the products. So the development process is entirely different than for products that are tailored to what consumers want. I'm not saying you can't buy products sold to consumers. Go for it. It's just not going to be the most optimal use of your money. So if you want to find a way to make the most of your limited dollars, professional brands could be a good filter.

The other filter is learn your ingredients. I think I've said this in a couple of posts. Knowing basic ingredients in beauty products allows you to look for the stuff you like in the higher priced brands and see if it's in your lower priced brands. Also you can make a call as to whether or not that expensive cream really has enough of a particular ingredient in it to justify its expensive price. The higher the amount of the ingredient, the higher it is up on the label. Take a moment to compare the first three ingredients in a professional moisturizer and a retail moisturizer and you'll see what I mean. But if you find that ingredient that you love in your professional moisturizer in some generic brand at the drugstore, get it! It may not be the best use of your money, but at least you know what you are paying for.

I'm not gonna lie. I love Drag Queen makeup. It's so exaggerated, over the top and glam. And my favorite thing in life is when women do it. Because it makes us look hyper feminine. Now I'm not a big fan of Lady Gaga's drag looks because really, she's more doing Art School makeup. Which a drag queen wouldn't be caught dead in. Nope, Drag Queens wanna do everything in their (and MACs) power to make them look as feminine as possible.

So my favorite two looks of the don't are the queens of the drag queen make-up: Kim Kardashian and Pamela Anderson. I love those crazy spider lashes on Kim. Yes, I'm currently trying to grow my own with Latisse. And the ideal would be if I could find someone to tint my upper and lower lashes every month. Then I would have similar spider lashes. Really, I have very long lashes on the bottom. Although I think that has to do with the fact that I don't wear mascara there. Thank Risa (friend/esthetician) for that tip. Which means that now I only pull out the mascara for the special occasions since even the most gentle mascara has been damaging my lashes.

Pam Anderson. What can I say. You know what works on your eyes. Lots and lots and lots of dark black and light blue shadow blended to a black mixed with smokey grey. Love it! You will always be an edgy Barbie come to life for me. Speaking of the smokey eye, I love the trend that we are moving towards of monochromatic color on the lid, in the crease and under the eye. I first noticed it with Drew Barrymore's commercial for the Cover Girl product that is color and primer in one. This trend speaks to the lazy beautician in me for simple everyday makeup that makes your eyes pop. Blending is just too much work for the office and has been relegated to the weekends.

Beauty Share of Wallet

Share of Wallet is a fancy MBA marketing term for how people decide to spend their money. I spend the majority of my wallet on beauty products, entertainment and technology. Within beauty, skin care products get the highest share of wallet. Not just because I'm a facialist. I've always cared way too much about my skin. Come to think of it, that's probably what drove me to become a facialist. Skin is something that you carry with you forever. It should be your beauty foundation.

Onto beauty spurlges. Everyone always asks me what they really need to spend on their beauty products. I think this comes from the fact that there is such a wide range of prices out there. $1 for Suave shampoo, $50 for Kerastase shampoo. $5 for Olay face wash, $38 for SkinCeuticals face wash. What do you really need to put your money towards?

Depends. I know that wasn't the easy answer you wanted to hear. The reality is that everyone should buy a face wash, shampoo and moisturizer that is appropriate to their skin/hair type. The best way to figure that out is to go to a professional and ask. Next time you get a haircut, make sure you to ask what the best type of shampoo for your hair is. When you go to your facialist, ask what ingredients/type of cleanser they recommend for you. For example, some people do great with a gel cleanser, while others need a cream cleanser. As far as buying the particular brand that your hair stylist and facialist recommends, it really has to do with your particular needs. Do you have problem areas (dandruff, dry hair, breakouts)? Then you should try to stick to the brands that your hair stylist/facialist recommends. The reason is that they have more than likely seen their fair share of the problems that you are dealing with. They've spent years trying out different products with their clients and now they definitely know what products will actually truly solve your problems. Your less likely to end up with a closet full of products with half met expectations. You are paying for knowledge when you buy that face cream from your facialist.

If you have normal hair and normal skin, you can probably get away with getting the cheapest hair and skin care products out there. But if you have any sensitivities at all, you are going to want to avoid over the counter products you can get at drugstores and grocery stores. The reason those products are so cheap is because they have less active ingredients. That's why they work just fine for people that have normal hair and normal skin who don't really need a lot of active ingredients. They just need something that is going to clean their skin and their hair. But the reason those products are irritating to the majority of us who have skin/hair problems is because what they lack in active ingredients, they make up in fillers, preservatives and perfumes. Scent is the number one allergen out there. Next time you are at the drugstore, take a whiff of the biggest brands that you know (the ones you see the most on TV) and you'll notice that they have very intense smells. That's because they are filling their bottles with scent. Sometimes, to be fair, that scent is being used to mask lower quality ingredients.

Let's say you have problems with your hair/skin but you really want to spend your share of wallet on that vacation to Mexico. Then make sure you ask your hair stylist/facialist to talk to you about the ingredients in the products that they recommend. Your task will be to become a label reader. For example, for the majority of people with acne, hydroxy acids (salicylic and glycolic for example) and benzoyl peroxide are the most effective ingredients. Typically the products that your facialist are recommending for your skin have those ingredients in them. You can try out the drugstore versions, just make sure that your product doesn't have too many ingredients that might irritate your already sensitive skin. If you have any questions about a particular ingredient, bring the products you are using into the salon or spa and ask. Many facialists and hair stylists are beauty ingredient scientists.

I am a medical perfectionist. Okay stop laughing. I'm a hypochondriac. Which just means that I like to fix every single health problem that I have.

Since skin is my passion, perfecting my own skin is my life's work. Right now I'm dealing with a hodgepodge of skin issues that make me very unhappy. Have irritations on my skin really does affect my mood. But they also allow me to experiment with a wide variety of treatments.

First up, I tried the one that maybe you've heard before: Pre-Natal vitamins for hair, skin and nails. I do see a shine to my hair and my nails are stronger than ever. But my skin didn't get better or worse. Next, probiotics. I've heard about them for about a year from my beautiful massage therapist client Jenny. Then I started seeing commercials touting their miracle benefits. I've been taking them for about a month and haven't felt anything (except the occasional heartburn). Onto Omega 3s which change your heart and your life, supposedly. I will attest to the fact that when I briefly took Lovaza (prescription version of Omega 3s) I had the softest skin ever. I've been trying to get about 3G of Omega 3s a day and I've noticed my skin softening. Now the bain of my existence: Hormonal Acne. It's been a big problem for me in the past two months. I stopped hormonal birth control back in February (I'd been on it for 10 years, seemed like enough time) and expected my skin to explode.

Nothing happened, oddly enough, except for increased oil production around my nose. Then in August my face started to fall off. I've been on the roller coaster ride of battling hormonal acne flair-up since then. One will pop up just as soon as another one has healed. Just in case you aren't familiar with it, hormonal acne is very similar to cystic acne, in that it is often deep, angry and painful.

I'm going to give the probiotics and Omega 3s two more months and then I'm going to try the next beauty health product on my todo list: Cod Liver Oil. Yup, that stuff from when our grandparents were kids. It's Omega 3s plus Vitamin A. Vitamin A helps your skin cells shed and renew themselves (that's what RetinA is). I'll report back in the New Year on whether or not I've seen a change from Cod Liver Oil!

It's crazy talk, but I think I might be ready to commit to lip stick again. OCC's Lip Tar have me jumping back into lipstick. They are those hybrid thingies that go on like a lip gloss and stain your lip like a lipstick or a lip stain. The only problem that I have is getting used to the lipstick thing again. It is very drying. I'm sure there are lipsticks with mega moisture. I'll just have to do some more investigating.

I'm totally down with the bright pink. Spider lashes too. But glossy eye shadow is not my thing. I have enough problems with my shadow slipping as it is. No more gloss on top of that. Although I should probably never say never. It seems like it might be one of those things that if I try it, I'll love it.

As for the title of this post, it refers to the beauty baggage that we all carry with us. Me, I can never go too long with unplucked eyebrows, because it reminds me of my high school days. My BF Paul warned me about the dangers of over plucking after I had a wee bit of a waxing accident last week (a perfect storm of too hot wax, double waxing and waxing on the face). Don't worry I will never take it to the extreme of bleaching or disappearing eyebrows.

Lips are the other big beauty baggage that I carry around. For some reason, my small mouth and cupids bow lips look funny to me when they stand out with lipstick. It's that time of year, where beauty mags and beauty writers try to convince us that Peacock Blue is the new black. Seriously. I read that Peacock Blue was the color for fall. Which is funny because I've loved teal forever. But it sounds so much fancier as Peacock Blue, mais non?

Destination manicure: I like the idea of having a high-end selection of shades. But I don't need to spend hours at the nail salon getting pampered. My ideal spot would be simple but upscale decor plus speed. I'm kind of looking for a blowout bar concept for nails.

Lipstick/Lipgloss hybrid: I've been feeling a pull back towards lipstick lately. Crazy I know, but I definitely want something a little more matte for everyday. But not too matte or that would look too dry. Hybrids seem like a good fit. I've even seen a lipstick/lipgloss/lipstain hybrid. Talk about being everything to everyone.

Oil cleansers: I know this strikes fear in the hearts of my American girls. But they have been big in Europe for years. The idea is that like attracts like. Plus the thinking is that it's better to nourish than strip. If you use a cleanser that is too harsh, you'll just end up increasing the oil production. I tried the Oil Cleansing Method (using a mixture of Jojoba and Castor Oil). It wasn't for me because I very quickly developed cystic acne. Dermalogica has a product called Pre-Cleanse which is an Olive and Apricot-Kernel based cleansing oil. Now that the weather is a little cooler and my skin feels drier, it might be a good time to experiment with Pre-Cleanse.

On a side note, I've never had good luck as a kitchen witch. In case you don't know that turn of phrase, a kitchen witch is someone who mixes up products in their kitchen. Every time I've tried the Crushed Aspirin mask or Homemade Oil Cleansing, I've inevitably done something to my face. I do tend to recommend that people stick with the products you can buy in stores because while the idea of putting fresh strawberries on your face sounds appealing, the reality is that the chemical version of strawberries for your face is more cosmetically elegant.

Perfume Necklace: I love this idea. Fashion + Beauty = awesome! I'm not a huge perfume person since my BF Paul is a sensitive Libra when it comes to those things. I'm more interested in spicy, floral scents (which he calls artificial and chemical) and he likes fruit scents. But the idea of roller ball perfumes appeals to me since it's in an oil-base and adds a little nourishment to your skin (that you don't get from alcohol-based perfumes)

Latisse week 8

I've had some eye irritation so I've decided to cut back on Latisse. I am using it 2x a week and using an Eyelash conditioner by Enormous Lash the other 5x a week.

I've definitely seen an increase in my lash quantity over the past 8 weeks. My lashes aren't freakshow long yet but I think they might be in another 8 weeks. Keep your fingers crossed!

I'm not a huge fan of travel because a. I have the best bedin the world b. Anthony Bourdain has shown me the world already!

But if you do have to travel, here are some great tips onbeing beautiful while you travel.

My favorite tip from the article is about doubling up onyour Omega 3s.

"three Omega-3 capsules twice a day on the day ofthe flight, and the same the next day. It’s a natural anti-inflammatory, willhelp prevent blood clots (see above) and works magic on your skin."

The number one thing to remember when traveling is water.Get your hydration internally by drinking plenty before, during and after yourflight. Don't forget the external hydration by using a moisturizer and facialspritz on the flight. You'll probably want to skip any heavy foundation orpowders before you board. Then I'd recommend a light moisturizer once every 5hours while you are on the plane. My favorite is Dermalogica'sActive Moist. You can also bring a facial spritz like Dermalogica'sMulti-Active Toner. Not everyone needs to spend money on toner, but if youtravel a lot or have dry skin, then toner can be great for refreshing your skinthroughout the day (or flight).

I also love the tip about a hydrating mask after you land.Wouldn't that be the best way to relax in the hotel after a long flight? Myfavorite simple hydrating mask is Aloe Vera, but if you aren't into the DIY, Ilove Dermalogica'sMulti-Vitamin Power Mask. It has hydration from Vitamins C & E,plus some very gentle exfoliation from Vitamin A.

Its hard to think up new services. There are only so many things that can be done with hair, skin, nails and makeup. But that doesn't mean that everyone out there isn't trying. We would regularly try to brainstorm service ideas when I worked for a hair care manufacturer. The best we could come up with at the time was Baliage, which is french for painted on highlights.

See to most people it just looks like crappy grown out roots. Which is a style that I rock all the time since I'm lazy about getting my hair done. It's just so much work. No seriously, I'm usually too antsy to get my hair colored and cut all in one session. And I'm way too impatient to get highlights. I know highlights change a lot of peoples lives, but I've never liked them on my hair. I was relieved once to talk with my hairdresser educator pal Annie who said that you should match your highlights to your texture. I.E. if you have a ton of texture (crazy curly hair) skip the highlights, but if you have pin straight hair, you can use highlights to create the illusion of texture. Since I more often then not where my hair curly, Annie's revelation was such a relief to me.

I experimented with a block of color around my face/bangs last year that I liked but it was ultimately too much upkeep. I've slowly worked my way back to a solid block of color. Then I started noticed the Ombre thang, which looked like something I could do. Dark roots that gradually get lighter to the ends. Right now I'm kinda rockin' the opposite because I've been experimenting too much with hair color (and my hair tends to pick up a lot of hair color very easily). But next time I go to the salon, I'm going to get a little more bold and lighten up the ends. Its just hair right? And if it looks disastrous I can color it back or cut it off. That's my favorite part about hair color. It's so kinda-but-not-really-permanent!

Right now I'm rockin' blue glitter tips. I'm digging this more than the gold glitter which looked a little cheesy. I tried out a matte pink tip and it just didn't go so well. I'm still struggling with how to get the crispest line for the manicure. I tried the qtip dipped in nail polish and that was a mess.

I googled and found a nail polish blog that had some really good tips on clean up. Number one tip that I'm going to use: brush! I actually have a cheap make-up brush that I think would be perfect to help me in my quest to get some super crisp french tip.

The best tip is to do the clean up on dry nails. Sometimes it's the simplest things that help a girl out! When I tried the clean up on semi-dry nails, it was a hopeless mess. I'm sure it's going to work a bit better once I let my nails dry a bit.

The other great tip that I found on lacquerized was called wrapping. It's the process of tapping a little bit of color on the edge of or under your nail. This will help seal the tips and prevent chipping. Which is something I desperately need since the tips of my nails always seem to get chipped within one day of applying my polish!

In the quest for easier hair removal, I've toyed with the idea of laser hair removal. It's just so expensive and doesn't get rid of the hair permanently. Just kinda thins it out like waxing does.

Recently I stumbled upon an article talking about Boots IPL hair reduction system. They make bold claims (6-12 weeks! Permanent!) that I'm not sure they can really substantiate. If it only thinned out my hair, I would still be happy.

Cosmetically Elegant

Cosmetically Elegant. The first time I heard that term was in a skin care seminar for Skin Medica. They were talking about how many women don't use Retin A from the doctor because the consistency is not that great. So true! Everyone I know has a half-used tube of RetinA that they've tried to use in their product closet. You can't throw it out because it is so expensive! But I never used it because it smelled so bad. RetinA is the Catch22 of beauty products.

SkinMedica and other skin care lines put Retinol (a derivative of Retin A) in lotions that smell pretty and feel good going on. That simple step allows for much greater patient compliance. I know it's true for me. As soon as I got Retinol in a night cream that didn't smell like dirty feet, I used it all up!

Which got me thinking about other things that have to be cosmetically elegant in order for me to use them. Apple products are the first ones that came to my mind. Sure I use a PC all day, and I'm not a snob so if anyone has an extra PC lying around, I'll take it. But I love sitting down and using my Macbook and my (just died last week) iMac. The whole user experience is so smooth. That's why Steve Jobs is an evil genius. He makes products that are significantly nicer to use than other computer manufacturers and then charges a premium for that. Damn him!

Oily Skin Care Tips from Rita

A lot of people with oily skin think that they don't have to moisturize. Not true! Sometimes, if your skin is oily, you might use products that dry up the oil and then over-dry your skin. Then you skin becomes more oily, you use more products and it gets even more dry. It's a vicious downward spiral.

Make sure you find a light, oil-free moisturizer that will give your skin proper hydration and help control oil. One of my favorites is from Dermalogica, Activ Moist. It's oil free and also has lavendar for extra anti-bacterial properties.

Glitter nails

So I tried the glitter tastic tutorial last night. And it was a little much. I love glitter everywhere but for some reason (I think my nails are too short), it just didn't look quite right.

I attacked the nails with acetone but man oh man, glitter is a bitch to get off. Here's my best attempt to de-glitter the nail bed.

I am loving the concept of a reverse French manicure though. One of the things that always drove me crazy about having long nails was the dirt under the fingernail look. Now that I have something covering my tips you'll never be able to see just how much dirt is under my fingernails! Mwwaahahah! Just kidding, I don't work outside or with my hands so they were never that dirty. But it was enough to annoy me and turn me a little OCD about handwashing.

My two other favorite nail tools that I recently discovered.

1. Formaldehyde-Free nail strengthener. I'm always looking for new ways to keep me from bitting my nails. One way is if I make my nails so strong that it's not worth it to bite them. I'm loving this FF nail strengthener from Nail Tek. The FF formula just keeps your nails from drying out since formaldehyde can over dry your nails. I haven't bitten my nails in over a month which is a big step for a chronic nail bitter.

2. Glass file: This thing is amazing. It's like having a metal file that you can use over and over again and really go at your nails (unlike with most flimsy nail files). But it is a super fine grit so it doesn't tear at your nails like those metal file.

Oh the infamous Mercury inRetrograde! I wonder when it was exactly that Mercury Retrograde first seepedinto pop culture knowledge. Well, now you too will know all about the infamousMercury and its retrograde period! Mercury represents communication and rulesthe air sign of Gemini and the earth sign of Virgo. Every once in a while(approximately 3 times a year) Mercury appears to be going backwards in thesky. Even though it's only an optical illusion, Mercury is still accused ofbeing in retrograde i.e. moving backwards or retreating. You may have heardlots of scary things about Mercury in Retrograde. For me, this is a time to slowdown in my communication, take a moment to think about that hastily writtenemail before I send it, double and triple check any contract. It's time foreveryone to embrace Mercury Retrograde as a reflexive period of deeper thought.My best advice during any Mercury Retrograde period is to be aware of theinfluences but like everything in Astrology, don't let it rule your life. So ifyou have to send an email or two, don't worry, it'll be okay. Just be awarethat it might end up in the spam box during Mercury in Retrograde.

This month, Mercury is doingits retrograde dance in Virgo and Leo. Because of the movement of Mercury"backwards" then "forwards" between an earth sign and afire sign, August will be peppered with passionate communication missteps inboth love (at the beginning of the month) and your day to day job (at the endof the month). By the beginning of September, when Mercury goes direct intoVirgo, we will all feel more strongly rooted in precise communication thatexemplifies Mercury's transit through Virgo.

July Homework: Astrological tribes

Last month, I encouragedeveryone to take a look at your Astrological tribe. Do a quick, back of theenvelope calculation on the people closest to you. Are there any patterns? Isthere too much or not enough of one particular sign or element? I counted up myclose friends and like any good astrologer, I discovered that I have groups offriends in every sign. However, there are a few signs that dominate my life.I've got lots of Geminis, Leos, Capricorns and Pisces, which means I've got anice mix of Air, Fire, Earth and Water people in my tribe. I'm able to rely ondifferent members of my network at times in my life whatever my needs are (aspark of inspiration, some much needed grounding energy, a lighterperspective).

The other interestingpattern I noticed is where in the Zodiac my astrological tribe is clustered.The easiest way to compartmentalize each section of the zodiac is to imagine itdivided into thirds. So signs in the first section represent the first third oflife. Signs in the second section are your midlife, while signs in the thirdsection are the last part of your life. My air friends are young which meansthey are extra child-like and excited about life. My fire friends are in themiddle of the zodiac which means that their passion for life has burnedbrightly for a while and shows no signs of abating. Both my water and my earthfriends are in the last part of the zodiac which means they've deepened theirrelationship with both their emotions and keeping their feet solidly connectedto the earth.

Aries (Mar 21 - Apr 19)

Glitter nation

I'm a total sucker for glitter. Must be that I've never completely grown out of my little girl phase.

As far as trends go, it seems like glitter is definitely bigger this year than last. Although I don't think I'll be over glitter for a very long time since it's a cheap and fun way to add a little sparkle to your life. And who doesn't love sparkle?

Glitter brands:

1. Best cheap glitter: Sally Beauty Supply has the most awesome cheap glitter in most colors of the rainbow, all for $1. Fair warning this stuff is really hard to get off. Also if it gets in your eyes, it can be irritating, so if you have sensitive eyes, skip the SBS glitter and go for the good stuff

2. Best high end glitter: For loose glitter that I'm going to put near my eyes, I like going to Naimie's and getting their recommendations. They have a wider selection of glitter colors than you can get through Sally's and the glitter is finer, so it is less irritating. http://www.naimies.com/

Here are my favorite uses for glitter in beauty:

1. Eyelid: this is my go-to look when I want to do something different with my eyes and I don't feel like doing a lot of work. Some black liquid liner, a cream base (I use NYX Eyeshadow base), any glitter that matches my outfit or mood (usually light blue), mascara and I'm good to go. This look really makes your eyes stand out. Plus everyone seems to be amused by glitter.

2. Eyeliner: this is fun, but it's a little too much for work and not enough for going out to a club. I use this if I'm feeling super ambition when I got out with friends to dinner, if I need a little extra sparkle. I'll dip a specially designated glitter liner brush (I like cheap angled eye liner brushes for glitter) in Glitter Glue (Ben Nye makes a great Glitter Glue) and then dip it into my best glitter.

3. Tattoos: These are a fun way to add sparkle to your body. All you need is body glue (which is the same glue nail techs use to glue on fake nails), stencils and cosmetic glitter (you could get away with using the cheap stuff from Sally's on your body). You can get the stencils from Glimmer Tattoo. If you are a cheerleader or going to a Ke$ha concert, you can free-hand it on your face as well. Just make sure that you keep your glitter brushes separate from your real make-up brushes, because glitter tends to get everywhere and render the brush useless for anything other than glitter.

4. Nails: I never thought about it until I watched this tutorial, but you can totally glitter up your favorite nail polish with the Sally's Glitter. In the tutorial, the girl mixes clear with glitter on a piece of paper and then applies the mixture to the nail tip to give a glittery twist to the french manicure. I love it! Sally's also has cute $1 glitter nail polishes that are fun because as they chip, they slowly disappear. So you get get that tattered look on your nails as quickly as you do if you go with traditional nail polish.

Beauty Relief™

I'm talking with a client the other day about the products to use on her face and what her skin care routine should look like. After I tell her to only wash her skin once a day, she looks at me with relief on her face. "Only once a day?" she asked. "Yeah, most people don't need to wash twice a day because it can over dry your skin," I said. I started to talk more about why she didn't need to wash her face too much, but she stopped me. "Oh I'm so relieved that you said that. I've always thought there was something wrong with washing your face only once a day."

It's such a funny moment when you experience what I'm going to call Beauty Relief (™ BBI). Every girl knows what I'm talking about. It's that moment when someone who you go to for beauty advice (older sister, best friend, gay best friend) tells you something that you think is right, but you have been afraid to do it because everyone (marketers and media) has told you otherwise.

For me, the strongest moment of Beauty Relief™ I ever remember experiencing was at a class on Bobbi Brown foundations. The educator said something about how you really don't have to put a full face of foundation on most people. The majority of people have redness and discoloration under their eyes, around their nose and on their chin. So put the foundation there and call it a day. For some reason I had always been taught you have to do it all, put it every. But I never really loved covering myself in foundation. Even the light mineral foundations, I always wanted to just put them on the red spots on my face. I don't know what kept me from doing that. It's silly looking back on it. I'm sure that most people who experience Beauty Relief™ also have a similar experience of "DUH! Of course I didn't have to do xzy."

My latest two Beauty Relief™ moments are all about eyeshadow. I read an article on Lauren Conrad's beauty website (no idea how I got there of all places and even though I know I shouldn't I kinda like it) that said that for simple make-up that guys like, try just a bold liner and mascara. Which I love because I have an ongoing battle with eye shadow creasing. I know about lid primer, I just can't be bothered for my every day look. And then Michelle Phan posted a video on crafting the perfect look for summer. Where she talks about tinted lid primer. OMG. Where have you been all my life tinted lid primer?

So this post says week 2 but really it's week 1 since I stopped for about a week because my eyes were irritated. Nothing too bad but I decided to start applying it at night. I had been applying it in the morning but I think that was too hard on my eyes. I also bought better disposable eyeliner brushes. See the ones that come with the kit suck. They suck enough that it kept me from using Latisse. I found a sweet little beauty supply store in San Gabriel Valley that sells pretty good disposable eyeliner brushes. Pretty good as in cheap and not as thick as the Latisse brushes.

I haven't really noticed a difference yet. But I will say this, Latisse is helping improve my night time beauty routine. Remove eye makeup, elliptical for an hour, shower, Latisse, retinol, night cream! The funny thing about a nightly ritual is that now I do it because my skin feels so much better in the morning. Imagine that!!!

Lash love aka Latisse Week 0

Here's a little background on my lashes: I used to have very long, lush lashes with blonde tips. Which just means that mascara really made them pop. Then I got mascara happy in the late 90s/early 2000s. The side effect was that my lashes broke off. Ever since then I've been very careful of the mascaras that I use.

I tried many mascaras over the years, looking for one that is soft yet adds volume. I tried one that vibrates (too clumpy so not an everyday mascara more of a going out mascara), cheap but standards (Maybelline Great Lash) and pro (MAC). The one that I love the best so far is NYX's Doll Eye Mascara. Check out the reviews on MakeupAlley.com It really is amazing and gives me the look and feel that I want. Light, no clumps, adds volume, stays put, comes off easily at the end of the night. What's not to love?

But like most beauty junkies, I need to try everything out there. Almost two years ago, I visited my first spa show where lash conditioners were THE product. I couldn't avoid purchasing of Revitalash, they almost threw it into my bag! I took it home, used it every once in a while, and then realized that it wasn't for me. Revitalash, like all the last conditioners, needs to be used every day to be effective.

Since I've been working at a MedSpa, I've learned more about lash conditioners, and specifically Latisse. Latisse is one of those products that's been around for a while, even before the lash conditioners came out. It actually has an interesting product history, where Jan Marini (facialist/skin care product company) licensed the main ingredient from Allergan. No one at the company wanted to use the main ingredient cosmetically because they didn't think that women would spend $100 a month on their lashes. Ha! I think the lash conditioner market is now a billion dollar market. Jan Marini was pulled from the shelves because Allergan wanted to start selling the product itself. Because it turned out that women will spend mucho dollars on lashes.

Now the market is flooded with Lash Conditioners, from prescription strength Latisse to OTC versions (Jan Marini and Revitalash are the big players) that use similar ingredients to Latisse, but at lower strengths. Technically, lash conditioners can't (and usually don't) use the exact same active ingredient as Latisse (bimatoprost) because Allergan has a patent on it.

I've wanted to try Latisse for a while, but I've been worried about the side-effects (turns hazel eyes to brown). And I also thought the price-point was out of reach ($100 per month). But I've watched and listened as people at the MedSpa where I work have been prescribed Latisse. First, the increased brown pigmentation of your eye (which comes from an increased Melanin production) is a side effect for a very small amount of people who were using the product in their eye. And secondly, most users of Latisse need to use it regularly the first month and then only once or twice a week going forward as maintenance. Its interesting that Allergan doesn't really talk about that part of Latisse. I know why they don't, they want to sell more bottles. But I think their overall market would explode if they were more honest about the usage habits. Instead of $1200 a year on lashes, it's more like $400 a year.

So here's a picture of my lashes before Latisse that I took this morning (7/15/11). They aren't that bad. I have a decent amount of lashes. I'm just annoyed by the blonde tips. And I would love to have them longer. So I'm actually going to do the work and use the product daily, at least for a month. Then repost!

Just one note, I went lash conditioner crazy at the Spa show in Vegas this year. I bought liquid liner and mascara that has lash conditioners from Beauty Society and Lash Food just to see if they did anything. I haven't really noticed a difference in the month since I started using them. Maybe my lashes are a tad bit fuller. But I want length! That's what Latisse POD (Point of Difference) is. It really does add length. I've seen Latisse lashes up close and personal and honestly its amazing.

Eclipse Season Culmination

I don't know about you all,but I feel it's definitely time to take a break from the swirl of energy outthere! We've been going through an intense series of eclipses for the pastmonth, starting with a solar eclipse in Gemini on June 1, a lunar eclipse inSagittarius on June 15th and culminating with another solar eclipse on July 1.Eclipses are intense time periods where there is more excited and emotionalenergy in the air than usual. That is because eclipses are the astrologicallyequivalent of "revelation". In June, we found ourselves starting newways of communicating, while at the same time letting go of long-heldphilosophies. For example, I was able to fully embrace Jenn August's call for anastrologer this past month as soon as I let go of seeing myself as purely atheoretical researcher. These two eclipses were very intellectual in nature,revealing entirely new ways of impacting the world around us.

Your mind must be trulybuzzing from all the radical ideas that have surfaced in June.

Take a moment at thebeginning of July to think about the shifts that you've made in your corephilosophy. Eclipse's revelatory energy follows a pattern of shaking things up,having everything settle, revealing a new reality and then forcing us to act onthis new reality.
